The Best Ride Routes in the San Juan Islands

around San Juan island - 51 MILES / 82.7KM

If you're looking to test yourself on San Juan Island, this is a favourite local route that avoids the busiest sections of road. You can plan stops at Cattle Point Lighthouse, Whale Watch Park, and finally Roche Harbor where you can find restaurants and local shops. This is an ideal day out for a serious cyclist. With rolling hills the whole way, don't be fooled by the distance: it's hard!

Cattle Point & False bay loop - 21.9 miles / 34.9Km

Moderate difficulty with some hills. This route is great for a family outing or a fun, fast group ride. The views are great on a clear day, reaching all the way to the Olympic Mountains, and an ideal route for a picnic or Historical Site-seeing as the route passes the National Historical Park: American Camp

Whale Watch Park Long Loop - 22 miles / 35.5km

This is a challenging ride with some substantial hills, but also one of the most rewarding.

Make sure you plan a stop at Whale Watch Park (AKA Lime Kiln Park) for a short walk to the water's edge to see if any of the local Orca pods are coming through. During Summer months there is a small shop selling essential snacks and souvenirs.

Mount Constitution, Orcas Island - 46 miles / 64.5KM

The most challenging local route, including a packed-gravel section and an 11 mile climb up to the top of the Islands' highest peak, Mount Constitution. This is a fantastic day out for more advanced riders, with some of the most exciting views. After the long climb to the top of the mountain, you can take a dip at the Moran State Park Cascade Lake and have an ice cream at Lopez Island Creamery before heading back to town or the ferry landing. During winter months, the top of the climb is often closed due to snowfall. Make sure you have some snacks with you for this ride!
